JPG, PNG or WebP: which image format should you use?

A plain-English comparison of JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF for photos, logos, screenshots and websites, and how to convert between them.

Updated 2 October 2026

Choosing the right format can halve your file sizes and avoid ugly results like jagged logos or blurry text. Here is when to use each one.

JPG (JPEG)

Best for photos. Small files, supported everywhere. It does not support transparency, and repeated saving slowly reduces quality, so keep your originals.

PNG

Best for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with transparency or sharp text. Lossless, so it never blurs, but photos as PNG are very large.

WebP

A modern format supported by all current browsers. Typically 25-35% smaller than JPG at similar quality, and it supports transparency. Great for websites; some older software and print shops still prefer JPG.

GIF

An old format limited to 256 colours. Use it only where a system requires it; for simple graphics PNG looks better.

Quick decision guide

  • Product or team photo for your website: WebP (or JPG).
  • Photo to email or print: JPG.
  • Logo on a transparent background: PNG.
  • Screenshot of a document: PNG, or JPG if it contains photos.

Convert in bulk

Convert image converts between JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF for several files at once. When converting to JPG, transparent areas become white.
