How to reduce image file size without losing quality

Smaller images load faster and are easier to email. Learn what quality setting to use, when to shrink dimensions and how to compress in bulk.

Updated 2 October 2026

A photo straight from a phone is often 3-8 MB. On a website it slows pages down; in email it fills inboxes. Most of that size is detail nobody can see on a screen.

Two ways to make images smaller

  • Lower the quality setting: JPG and WebP throw away detail the eye barely notices. A quality around 70 is usually indistinguishable from the original on screen.
  • Reduce the dimensions: a 4000-pixel-wide photo shown 1200 pixels wide is wasting space. Shrinking dimensions gives the biggest savings.

How to do it

  1. Open Compress image and select one or more images.
  2. Choose Balanced, and optionally "shrink wider images to" 1920 or 1600 pixels.
  3. Download. The result page shows how much smaller the files became.

For exact dimensions, use Resize image first.

A bonus: privacy

Phone photos can contain hidden data such as the GPS location where they were taken. Processing images here re-saves them without that metadata, which is safer before posting online.

What about PNG screenshots?

Screenshots with lots of photos inside can be much smaller as JPG or WebP; convert them with Convert image. Keep PNG for logos and images with transparent backgrounds.
